Where craftsmanship meets creativity

For over 50 years, Pro Arte’s passionate team of artisans have been producing superior handcrafted brushes, made with the finest ethically sourced materials, inspiring artistic excellence. Trusted by renowned artists worldwide, their extensive range of styles and sizes caters to all artistic abilities.

Roy Thompson, Pro Arte’s founder, had always been a keen and talented artist. He’d grown up loving the romance between easel and canvas and specialised in oil painting.

As a consequence, he made the decision to begin his own business specialising in a product that was closes to his heart, brushes! Brushes are tactile, the transition between paint and the canvas or the paper, and he loved the way a good brush could perform this task with ease…

10 years after the launch of Pro Arte, his son, Peter joined the business. The primary objective was to create a fully fledged manufacturing facility in order to make not only the best brushes currently available but also to secure Pro Arte’s destiny from distributors to manufacturers without the reliance on outside parties.

Peter now runs the business along with his son Johnny, who joined on a university degree apprenticeship scheme. The ethos of the business is to promote from within giving the opportunity to current staff members to benefit as their experience grows. Johnny has learned all brush manufacturing techniques from the ground up. Business is evolving all the time and the younger generations always bring something new to compete with the ‘old ways’. Pro Arte have a good balance between the two.

Pro Arte, pride ourselves on the fact that they have utilised a traditional Yorkshire woollen spinning mill to accommodate their requirements. At the turn of the millennium Park Mill in Skipton was purchased, renovated, and modernised to create the perfect manufacturing, office and dispatch areas over three floors.

“Our process to find the best materials and produce the best brushes will always be ongoing.”
